Upskilling

A small fleet of curtain side and tail lift 3.5T Vans are now operational at the Preston HMT Group depot primarily used for upskilling new employees from a Class B to Class C but also playing a crucial role of delivering time critical pallets across Lancashire.

This pioneering new role for the HMT Group has a dedicated personal training facility and trainer that helps in every step of the training program to help the driver progress their career as a HGV driver.

On a typical day the new driver starts his morning in the training room going over topics to help pass their HGV test with practical demonstrations , toolbox talks, videos and quiz’s.

Each driver has the help of a personal mentor to help guide them through the mock exams until they feel confident enough to go for the actual exam.

After the classroom training it’s hands on organising and loading the pallets for their delivery route, this is a scaled down simulation of what all the Class 2 vehicles do on a daily basis. They learn how to use the live pallet tracking and delivery process from scanning the pallet in the warehouse to arriving the pallet at the destination.

When they pass their Class C licence the transition to an 18 Tonne vehicle is as smooth as possible as they are already familiar to the delivery process and collection procedures.

This is an ongoing commitment from the HMT Group that will see new HGV drivers join the industry and become part of our every growing team.
